Interferon supplies – Update 19 August 2024
For some time we have been aware that there are international shortages of interferon alpha, in particular pegasys (pegylated interferon alpha 2a).
We have been liaising via our medical team with the national pharmacy and procurement teams looking at advice and options. This includes the possibility of using different types of interferon (for example Besremi, pegylated interferon alpha 2-b) which requires significant work– we expect further guidance to follow.
Current guidance issued to hospital teams will be:
To avoid wastage: aim to move to a whole syringe (e.g. if taking 45mcg every week from a 90mcg syringe move to 90mcg every 2 weeks).
If a lower dose could be used to do this where possible but using a whole syringe.
As a community of patients it will be beneficial to all if these changes are adopted. However, we would urge you not to change your dose of interferon without instruction from your hospital team AND to note that since there is no data regarding safety and stability, syringes of interferon should NOT be reused.
Further information:
MPN Voice is actively monitoring the situation and will update accordingly, as we recognise it may be a cause of worry or uncertainty for many patients in the community. MPN Voice however, cannot provide individual patient management recommendations.
Medical teams are working nationally with pharmacists and other colleagues to secure the best supply and other alternatives.
If you have specific concerns, contact your local haematology team but do respect that they are busier than normal at present due to holidays and national blood shortages.
When we know more we will set up a webinar.
