In Conversation With … CNS Avril Gleeson, Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Mercy University Hospital, Cork, Ireland, who talks to Nona about the telephone clinic for reviewing MPN patients, which was set-up before the COVID pandemic, and the benefits for the patients, particularly patients who have challenges travelling to the hospital, or patients who are working and how having the clinic already up and running meant that during COVID, MPN patients did not have too much disruption in their ongoing care. Avril also spoke about the support services provided to MPN patients of all ages, their family members and carers, with provision of information booklets/resources and signposting to other service providers, including MPN Voice for information, the buddy support program and the HealthUnlocked online forum, and the psycho-oncology support service in the hospital which is available to all patients, family members and carers. Avril said her ambition for the future is that she would like to see the service evolve in Ireland, haematology CNSs/ANPs (Advanced Nurse Practitioners) cover many haematological diseases/conditions, and ideally they would be able to focus on MPNs and become an expert.
