MPDs reclassified
In 2008 the World Health Organization (WHO) reclassified myeloproliferative disorders (all MPDs including myelofibrosis (MF), polycythaemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythaemia (ET) as “myeloproliferative neoplasms”. This is an important change if you are receiving treatment for MPNs. From April 2009 all people in England receiving medication for the treatment of cancer, including MPNs, have been exempt from prescription charges.
Who is entitled to an exemption?
England People living in England who have a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) are entitled to an exemption from prescription charges for medication relating to their MPN. This exemption applies to all MPNs including essential thrombocythaemia, polycythaemia vera and myelofibrosis.
Scotland All prescriptions issued on a Scottish NHS prescription form and presented for dispensing in a Scottish pharmacy are free of charge.
Wales If you are registered with a GP in Wales you are entitled to free prescriptions from a pharmacist in Wales.
Northern Ireland All prescriptions are free of charge in Northern Ireland.
How to qualify
If you are taking medication for your MPN you will need to complete a FP92A (dated from 01 April 2009). You can obtain a FP92A from your GP surgery. Once you have completed the form return it to your GP surgery for your GP to sign and confirm your entitlement, the surgery will post your FP92A. Your exemption card will be posted to you. Your Haematologist can also provide a FP92A and sign it for you.
Exemption cards are valid for five years. You will automatically receive a reminder when it is time to renew.
